When your gun says no
I don’t know what’s cooler, a story about black box guns, or the fact that the title namechecks Judge Dredd.
But what I do know is this. Eventually there will be three types of guns:
1. Legacy guns dating back to the age when guns didn’t contain tracking/override electronics.
2. Federal-controlled guns whereby Uncle Sam gets to decide if you can have another shot.
3. Hacked guns
2. and 3. of course will be tough to tell apart. This is going to be fun.

You left out “Guns you make with your computer controlled mill and lathe.” See the old story, “Burning Chrome” by Gibson (or was it “Johnny Mnemonic”) where our hero makes his own shotgun.

not only are you correct that that should be part of the list, but your comment now makes me realize (after several minutes of searching) that I can’t even find my copy of the BC short stories. aaargh!

Well, there is always http://project.cyberpunk.ru/lib/burning_chrome/.
Though, it turns out that the story is Johnny Mnemonic (http://lib.ru/GIBSON/j_mnem.txt). I misremembered and he only makes his own ammo. This is the opening paragraph:
“I put the shotgun in an Adidas bag and padded it out with four pairs of
tennis socks, not my style at all, but that was what I was aiming for:
If they think you’re crude, go technical; if they think you’re
technical, go crude. I’m a very technical boy. So I decided to get as
crude as possible. These days, thought, you have to be pretty technical
before you can even aspire to crudeness. I’d had to turn both those
twelve-gauge shells from brass stock, on the lathe, and then load then
myself; I’d had to dig up an old microfiche with instructions for hand-
loading cartridges; I’d had to build a lever-action press to seat the
primers -all very tricky. But I knew they’d work.”

well, custom-made guns should still be part of the list anyway. . .!
the artistry of his prose is astounding. , , .those four sentences on technical vs. crude are so subtly brilliant . .

And remember that he probably wrote that around 1980 or so…

Guns are one thing. Ammo a whole other issue. Save your brass.

Thank science for modern guns!! I dare say I’d be dead if every gun worked every time. I value the virtual. We can do cool things like live forever..
